Are there any steps or just direct writing an image file to a SD?
No, the official firmware is called the Rockchip Firmware, which is not a raw firmware able to flash to SD card directly.
Of course, there’s way to convert Rockchip Firmware to raw firmware, but it is not trivial.

Unzip the Ubuntu image.
